Seven Red Flags Our Inspectors Find Most Often in Los Angeles

Flood damage, hidden collision repair, cleared trouble codes, and the other issues that show up again and again on LA used cars.

Seven Red Flags Our Inspectors Find Most Often in Los Angeles

1. Recently cleared trouble codes

A scan showing 'monitors not ready' usually means codes were erased shortly before you arrived. It's the single most common attempt at concealment we see.

2. Repainted panels the seller never mentioned

A paint depth meter tells the truth in seconds. Mismatched readings across a fender and door mean bodywork, and bodywork means an impact.

3. Suspiciously clean engine bays

A degreased engine on a 12-year-old car often hides an active leak. We look for fresh seepage at the valve cover, oil pan, and rear main.

4. Flood indicators

Silt in seat rails, corroded connectors under carpets, and a musty smell that air freshener can't hide. Coastal and post-storm cars need this check every time.

5. Frame and structural repair

Kinked rails, fresh welds, and replaced radiator supports. These devalue a car heavily and can make it unsafe.

6. Tires that don't match

Four different brands, or DOT codes eight years old with plenty of tread left. Old rubber is a safety issue and an immediate cost.

7. Two of the same problem

One worn bushing is maintenance. Worn bushings, worn shocks, and uneven tire wear together mean the car was run hard and deferred — expect more to follow.
